Description

After completing your 8-hour pre-assignment course and starting work as a security guard in New York, the next step is to take the state-required 16-hour on-the-job training. By law, this course must be finished within your first 90 days of employment.

This two-day program provides in-depth instruction on the responsibilities and professional standards expected of security personnel. Topics covered include:

  • The duties of a security guard
  • Legal powers and their limits
  • Handling emergencies
  • Communication skills and public relations
  • Access control procedures
  • Ethics and professional conduct
  • Incident Command System
  • Awareness and prevention of terrorism

To successfully complete the course, participants must pass a final exam based on all the material presented. Classes are held over two consecutive days—typically Wednesday and Thursday—and are offered both in-person and as live, instructor-led sessions via Zoom.

You must complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training before enrolling in this course. CSSB Serve offers the 8-hour and 16-hour programs separately or as part of a discounted package. Once you’ve finished the 16-hour training, you’ll also need to take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training each year to maintain your license in good standing.

This course applies to unarmed security guard licensing only and is not intended for armed guard certification. With our online option, you can join from anywhere in New York State without having to travel to a training site—making it easier than ever to meet your NYS requirements and continue your career in the security field.
