This convenient package includes both the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course and the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course—covering all the classroom requirements for becoming an unarmed security guard in New York State.

You’ll begin with the 8-hour pre-assignment class, the first step toward applying for your Security Guard Registration Card through the NYS Department of State. This class is offered online multiple times each week—Monday, Tuesday, or Saturday mornings, plus Friday evening sessions. Once you’ve completed the pre-assignment course and obtained your security guard license, you’ll move on to the 16-hour on-the-job training, which is delivered over two consecutive days (Wednesday and Thursday) in a live, instructor-led online format.

Enrollment Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien
• Must have a high school diploma or GED

Steps to Obtain Your NYS Security Guard License:

• Complete and pass the 8-hour pre-assignment course.
• Submit fingerprints and pass the required background check.
• Apply for your Security Guard Registration Card with the Division of Licensing Services.
• Within your first 90 days of employment, complete the 16-hour on-the-job training course.

To maintain your license in good standing, you must also take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course every year after completing your initial training.
