Description

If you want to become a licensed security guard in New York State, the very first step is completing the state-mandated 8-hour pre-assignment training course. This beginner-level class, available at any NYS-approved security training school, is required before you can apply for a Security Guard Registration Card through the New York Department of State.

During this introductory session, you’ll gain a solid understanding of the basic duties and expectations for security professionals in New York. Core topics include:

  • Understanding the role of a security guard
  • Legal authority and its limits
  • Responding to emergencies
  • Effective communication and public interaction
  • Access control procedures and types
  • Professional ethics and conduct

To pass the course, you’ll need to achieve a successful score on the final exam, which features both multiple-choice and true/false questions covering all material discussed in class. Before the test, your instructor will review key points to help ensure you’re fully prepared. Once you pass, you’ll receive a certificate of completion to include with your security guard license application.

CSSB Serve offers this 8-hour program in-person and online. Our live, virtual classes—held via Zoom and led by certified instructors—are available weekly for your convenience.

Security is a growing field with opportunities in a wide variety of settings, from corporate offices to event venues. This course not only meets the state’s initial licensing requirements but also gives you the foundational skills to build a rewarding career in security or even transition into law enforcement.

After completing this training, you can submit your application for your guard card. Keep in mind that New York State also requires you to complete a 16-hour on-the-job training course within the first 90 days of employment as a security guard.
