This 32-hour online preparation course is designed to help you pass both the written and on-site FDNY FLSD F-89 Certificate of Fitness examinations. The program closely follows the official FDNY study guide and covers essential fire safety knowledge, building codes, and emergency management procedures.
Who Needs an F-89 Certificate?
In New York City, high-rise office buildings, hotels, and certain commercial properties with fire alarm systems and two-way voice communication must have a certified Fire and Life Safety Director (FLSD) on-site during regular business hours. The FLSD is responsible for implementing fire and emergency action plans, coordinating evacuations, and ensuring the safety of all building occupants.

- The F-89 replaces the former F-59 FS/EAP Director Certificate of Fitness.
- Certificates are issued to a specific person and tied to a designated location.
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Proficient in English and able to pass both written and oral exam components
- Must have one of the following:
- At least 3 years of full-time work experience in firefighting, public safety, fire prevention, code enforcement, emergency preparedness, or building systems regulated by construction codes
- OR 18 months of full-time work experience, with at least 6 continuous months at the same location, in one of the fields above
- Completion of an FDNY-approved FLSD training course (this program fulfills that requirement)
- Pass both the FDNY written exam and on-site practical test at FDNY Headquarters
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position
