What are the Mandatory Courses in NYS to Become a Licensed Security Guard?

Several individuals in NYS seek entry-level positions, career advancements, and specialization in areas like security and management, but they often don’t have the right guidance and training to qualify for the certification. At CSSB, the Central Security Service Bureau, we aim to provide aspiring security professionals with extensive training to become licensed security guards. If you are someone who aspires to handle responsibilities in the security department or take up management roles, then we are here to provide you with the complete guide on various essential courses. To become a licensed security guard, there are some mandatory courses:

8-hour pre-assignment training, 16-hour on-the-job training, and 8-hour annual in-service training course.

Online 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course

At CSSB, an NYS-approved security training school, our training courses are available online. The pre-assignment training course is important as a first step to obtain a security guard registration card in the New York State Department of State. Under this course, you are made familiar with the role of the security guard, legal authorities, limits, how you have to respond to emergencies, and are guided about public interaction, control procedures, code of conduct, and ethics. The session is important and acts as a foundation.

Online 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course

After you complete the previous course and start working as a guard, it’s important to complete a 16-hour on-the-job training course within 90 days of your employment. This course is again mandatory. At CSSB, it’s a two-day program where the participants are provided with in-depth instructions about their responsibilities and the expected professional standards. Note: This course applies only to unarmed security guard licensing and does not apply to armed security.

Online 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course

After you have finished your training and passed the test in the 16-Hour on-the-job training course, you must apply for the 8-hour annual in-service training course to ensure your license is in good standing.

Since our security guard training courses are available online, they are accessible to all. No matter where you are located in New York State, you can apply for this course. For queries or concerns, feel free to reach out to us at CSSB.
